When Mum tells Poppy, she can’t believe it. Disneyland! Oh my god! She will definitely buy some Minnie Mouse ears and definitely definitely go on the log ride. If she gets tired like she does sometimes she’ll just keep going. Who knows when you get to go to Disneyland again?
Mum says she’s excited they’re going, but she cries sometimes when Poppy talks about all the things she wants to do there. Poppy thinks it must be about the money, because she knows it can’t be cheap to fly there, but Mum says don’t worry about any of that. It’s taken care of. Maybe Mum won Lotto. She’s never mentioned it. Mum’s boyfriend Garry isn’t coming. Poppy is glad Garry isn’t coming. He’s okay, but she really just wants to enjoy it with Mum.
The kids in class are soooo jealous. Mark Cincanto has been to Disneyland, but he was only five and can’t remember heaps. Poppy likes visiting school. She’s not allowed to be around other kids that much. It’s not that bad, really, but she misses her friends. Katie Tucker comes to visit sometimes with her mum. She’s maybe Poppy’s bestest friend. They play Sar Macadora out on the back patio. Katie even came to the hospital a couple of times. Mum still picks up Poppy’s homework from the teacher but doesn’t give it to her anymore. Let’s watch some telly together instead, she says. Sometimes Mum is too sick to look after her and Garry takes the day off.
When Poppy goes to Disneyland she wants to eat a big bowl of nachos and get a photo in front of the castle. The man from the Foundation says he’s arranged for her to meet Snow White, but Poppy will wait and see. Lots of people promise things that don’t work out.
A month before the trip, Poppy gets a cold and has to stay home again. Mum is sick too. The doctor visits them. He’s wearing a mask. Poppy asks, does this mean I can’t go to Disneyland? The doctor says we’ll just have to wait and see. Wait and see. We’re still learning about what you have, he says. After a couple of weeks, he’s happy for them to go. Poppy says cool bananas. On the inside she is doing handstands. Maybe they’re both better for good this time?
She makes a list of all the rides she will go on, in order.
1. Pirates of the Caribbean.
2. Space Mountain.
3. Matterhorn Bobsleds.
Nah, 1. is Splash Mountain. It’s only brand-new. She saw it on telly and it looks awesome. You go full bore down this hill and get soaked! Mum’s giving it a miss. Maybe Poppy can change her mind. At the airport she has a milkshake and checks over her list. When she arrives she wants to know exactly where to go first. They only have three days there. It will be over so quickly.
