We are very excited to be introducing you to the 2016 Viva la Novella winners. This year Tom Langshaw and I have each nominated a winning entry and they are:
The Bonobo's Dream by Rose Mulready
and Populate and Perish by George Haddad.
These are very different works of fiction but are equally compelling.
Of The Bonobo's Dream, Tom says:
Rose immerses the reader in a world that is haunting and evocative, and she had me gripped from the first (poetic) line. This spec-fic novella begins with a nuclear family in an idyllic house. But all is not as it seems: the place is out of joint, and Rose beautifully navigates each character’s lonely orbit within its walls. Halfway through, the veil is torn away, and Rose takes us on a journey to strange, rewarding places. This story, replete with animals and plants – and dreams – has a very human heart.
Meet Rose, over at her first Q&A with Seizure.
Populate and Perish is the story of Nick, a young man in Melbourne, and his sister Amira who travel to Lebanon after the death of their mother looking for their estranged father – neither is prepared for what they find. With vivid evocations of contemporary Melbourne and Beirut, a palpable tenderness between the siblings and cutting social satire, this is a rich and surprising novella. By turns funny, sexy and dark, George brings a fresh new voice to Australian letters with his reworking of the vernacular.
Meet George here.
Congratulations to both winners, you'll be able to pre-order their books in advance of publication in August 2016.
This opportunity has been made possible by the support of IPEd and the NSW Society of Editors.
