In 2011 Seizure ran ‘The Five Obstructions’ with Sam Twyford Moore inspired by Lars von Trier’s experiment – setting a series of obstructions for his friend, the filmmaker Jorgen Leth to remake a short film following a series of strict rules. The idea was to encourage STM to develop his writing practice by setting tasks for rewriting one of his stories. It was an experiment that was both a success and a failure (in a similar fashion to the von Trier experiment). It failed in the sense that the project wasn’t completed and Twyford Moore opted out – due to life changes like becoming director of EWF – before completing the final challenge. It succeeded in its toying with creative practice and pushing the relationship between writer and editor/producer.
In 2015 we have a new participant and a new Loki setting the tasks. Rebecca Slater is a young writer in from Sydney who has worked in trade publishing and is currently journeying across America. Her work has appeared in the UTS Writers’ Anthology, Voiceworks, Broadsheet and Seizure where she has also been Flashers editor and Round-up Girl. The focus of Obstructions, Slater’s short story ‘Stewed Fruit’ won the 2013 Monash Undergraduate Creative Writing Prize and she has been awarded an Australia Council for the Arts, Artstart Grant.
Alice Grundy, co-founder and EiC of Seizure, will play the role of Loki/Lars.
Over the next 12 months, Grundy will set a series of challenges for Slater designed to push her creative practice and discover new possibilities in her writing. Follow along the tasks as they are announced, the responses as they’re published and the feedback as it’s revealed. Read the work, watch the video diaries, comment on the process.
With thanks to the Australia Council for the Arts we’re able to pay Slater for her work. Grundy is working gratis.
