Wow, wow. Applications for our Stepping Stones program closed yesterday and we are just thrilled at the response we got. There's such a range of personalities and experience that's it going to be very tough indeed to pick our four guest editors. Thank you all for your interest! Email interviews will commence soon. Now writers it's up to you - give these talented people four incredible novellas to work on. Viva La Novella 2 is still open for your submissions, you've got until December! If you're stuck on where to start, or perhaps you just want to make that novella POP - Stephen King's got a few golden pearls on the art of opening lines.
Things you'll enjoy clicking on:
Ever wanted to see every stage of the writing and editorial process mapped out visually with wit and colourful cartoons? U.S. graphic artist, Grant Snider, is all over it. Check out his take on the reading process and performance-enhancing drugs for writers.
If you're interested in writing collaboratively, you and your co-writers might wanna have a trial date on WriterDuet. It's basically a real-time screen-writing app that allows a number of writers to (privately) write and work together. Say sayonara to track changes!
We've all had our work rejected at one stage or another (right guys? right?). Take comfort in this – Donal Ryan's novel The Spinning Heart, was rejected 47 TIMES before it was accepted by a publisher. And you know what happened after that, his novel just went and got long-listed for the MAN BOOKER PRIZE this year. So yeah! Send that manuscript off ten more times, twenty, dare ya.
Things to go to:
Melbourne Writers Festival is coming up and it looks scary good. When you look at the program you’re going to be thinking things like: 'Oh wow, Teju Cole! Talking with Sam T-M! About Twitter!' #excited. 'Tao Lin, interesting.' 'OMG Tavi Gevinson?' 'The London Review of Books, really?' 'Cool, Elmo Keep on music criticism, Sophie Cunningham on the politics of sex, Jeff Sparrow on Ned Kelly’s bones! What?!' 'Meet the editors of some of my fave lit journals: KYD, Meanjin, Sydney Review of Books, ABR etc! The Lifted Brow’s having a party and I’m invited, awesome!'
You can have your own stream-of-conscious rant when you check out the program here.
This weekend Underbelly Arts is on at Cockatoo Island, so hop on a ferry on sunny Saturday and support independent Australian artists. If you go to their website you can see the projects, meet the artists, and read an interview with Nick Coyle (who never fails to make me lol) discussing the experience of art, the art world, and the moment when you walk into a gallery and have no idea what any of it means.
Pat Grant is hosting a session at the NSW Writers’ Centre on graphic storytelling called ‘Writing with Pictures and Drawing with Words’. It’s just ten bucks and aimed at writers with no background in visual communication.
