Viva La Novella Shortlister - Nick Gadd

What do you do in your day job/life?

I'm a public servant in Melbourne.

What’s the earliest thing you remember writing?

When I was ten I wrote a series of short stories (with illustrations) about a talking ostrich called Cyril.

When do you like to write?

I don't have a specific time – early mornings, evenings, weekends, whenever I can fit it in around work and family life.

If you could brunch with anyone, who would it be?

The American essayist Joseph Mitchell, famous for his tales of urban eccentrics. He probably wouldn’t come to brunch though. Maybe a beer in some downtown bar.

Most important thing the internet has taught you:

There is no subject, no matter how obscure, from Neolithic circles to Renaissance fonts, that doesn't have a community of people who think it is the most important thing in the world.

A quotation you have used more than once:

'I am not drinking any fucking merlot!' (Paul Giamatti in Sideways)

What’s next?

Continuing to explore the Melbourne suburbs and write about them on my blog,
